Palladium Saint Louis Sets the Landmark Social Scene
by Betty Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 1, 2009 - Culinary maestro Richard L. Nix, Jr., owner of Butler's Pantry, has unveiled a gleaming, stylized, full-service banquet facility in what used to be the laundry facility for the former St. Louis City Hospital.
Palladium Saint Louis opened its doors for a well-attended preview, October 28. Guests mingled beneath the carefully restored original wood ceiling and metallic silver steel trusses as they toured the approximately 6,500-square-foot facility and sampled tasty hors d'oeuvres and special non-alcoholic drinks, prepared by the staff of Butler's Pantry.
The venue's location was carefully researched, according to Elizabeth Hawkey, sales director for the Palladium. "Butler's Pantry, a catering company, has been functioning for nearly 43 years doing offside catering for functions and exclusive catering for venues throughout the city," stated Hawkey. Butler's Pantry is well-known for its French inspired menu at Café Madeleine, located in the Piper Palm House in Tower Grove Park.
"Richard Nix wanted to have his own space. He spent nearly 10 years looking for a space that met his specific needs. One of the most important things was to be located in the City of St. Louis. Another was to have enough space to hold 300 - 400 guests with uninterrupted views," said Hawkey.
Nix's dream was realized when Chris Goodson, principle of Gilded Age developed The Georgian Condominiums nearly four years ago in the former St. Louis City Hospital. Goodson developed the laundry space and leased it to Nix to create the Palladium. Construction was by BSI and original architectural design by the Lawrence Group. Hawkey noted that designer Mark Herman came on board to add some of the fun features that can be seen, including customizable soft "petal" dividers that raise and lower from the ceiling to create intimate room spaces.
With a nod to Nix's wishes, the Palladium can easily accommodate up to 400 guests for a seated event or up to 700 for a cocktail style reception. The main floor features a stage area and modern A/V equipment. Additional space is available on the mezzanine level, an original feature which once housed the laundry's offices.
The building is crowned with a replica of the historic copper cupola, similar to the cupolas on the adjacent complex, The Georgian Condominiums. Light streaming in from the large classic palladian windows - original to the laundry structure - flood the stained concrete floors. The light splashes onto classically patterned carpet and adds depth to the silvery platinum tones throughout the spacious room.
"The space really exceeded our expectations, especially with the lighting features and pedals," Hawkey said enthusiastically. Guests can enjoy an abundance of free parking, an element missing at many area banquet facilities. Adjacent to the Palladium is a new headquarters for the Butler's Pantry, also built by Gilded Age.
"Our first event, November 7, will feature a 16-piece jazz band for the Landmarks Association's 50th Anniversary Gala. It's a perfect combination because they do preservation of old buildings and we've done that here at the Palladium," stated Hawkey.
Just as the dilapidated City Hospital found new life as an elegant condominium complex, the Palladium Saint Louis, with it's platinum blend of historic and modern amenities, may indeed have found the perfect space for the landmark social scene. For more information, call 314-799-8886.
