One of several ornate murals inside the St. Charles Convention Center, painted by Gary R. Lucy, depicting Lewis and Clark and other historic features of St. Charles, Missouri.
|
Saint Charles was founded in 1769 as Les Petites Cotes
(The Little Hills) by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette. The riverfront trading center along the Missouri River just west of St. Louis grew into St. Charles,
a thriving city that was eventually selected as Missouri's First State Capital.
Brick streets, gas lights and an assortment of quaint storefronts and fine
restaurants illustrate its heritage in both the restored and rejuvenated
ten-block Nationally Registered Historic District and the 26-block Nationally
Registered Frenchtown Neighborhood District.
